Hot off the Press - Dec 4, 2009

Today, December 4th, we have finally gotten a little taste of some winter weather, although Capt. Chris is braving the cold & rain & wind to get his very first charter fisherman George Radcliff out on some specks. Up until this past Wednesday, the weather was great, the fishing even better. Had to feel a little sorry for the "Lucky" winners of the Sambar Deer hunt on St. Vincent Island this week as the rain held off until they arrived to be shuttled over & camp out for 3 nights. Some days don't you just love your warm house & comfy bed?

Most every fisherman can tell a good "Fish Tale" and can recognize one when they hear it. This one, however is true, or at least as close to the truth-telling as one can get. Long about the middle of November, when we were wondering if it was ever going to get cold again, it finally did for a day or so. One of our best Bayfishing Captains, who shall for the moment remain nameless, called me after his trip with a party of four anglers. I remarked to him that he sounded a little tired, to which he replied "Tarred?! I should be tarred! My people today caught about 250 speckled trout! Who do ya think had to unhook & release alla them feesh and then bait back alla them hooks?!" he exclaimed. "And then I took em to catch some a them big bull reds. They's in real good now. Whoooo, that's some good fishin!"

Translation? Finally the Fall fishing has heated up. (Fall fishing is normally considered from about the end of September through about Christmas, and winter time fishing is in January & February when it's really cold.) Huge schools of Big Bull Reds are in and these suckers put up about a half hour fight plus the specks and white trout are everywhere and biting well. Water temperatures and water levels are back to seasonal levels and we expect the striped bass fishing to fire off just any time. Most all of our fishing this time of year is inshore -- Bayfishing trips are for the fish eaters out there -- primarily catch & keep with live bait & shrimp. Flats trips are catch & release for sportfishermen that fish with light spinning tackle or fly rods. Tis the season!
