Apalachicola Fishing Report - Jan 18, 2000

All this past week we have been getting calls from people (mostly in the cold country) wondering if we fish in January and February and what we catch. The answer is YES! Speckled Seatrout and Tailing Redfish.

Tommy & Chris went out fishing together on Tuesday and Wednesday, January 11 & 12. The weather was calm, the conditions ideal for fly-fishing the mud bars and shallow oyster bar flats in Apalachicola Bay. They didn't seem to have much luck at first with a spoon fly, so Tommy dug in his box for a crab fly and WHAM! as soon as that crab hit the water there were redfish all over it. The 2 day tally for sight fishing redfish with Crab flys on a #2 hook was 15 total. 3 - 9lbs, 5 - 8lbs, 7 - 5 to 7lbs. Tommy remarked that they were 2 of the best days he had ever spent fly fishing with his brother. The next 2 days were spent at the fly-tying desk using up all of my rug yarn on these super crab flys. Be sure to ask Tommy about the first ones Jan Isley tied sitting in Tommy's living room with the stuffing from his old car seat.

In the mean time, a front moved in and we had a sho' nuff noreaster by Friday. Those of you who have fished with Tommy in the rain know that he does not cancel for a little weather - but he did reschedule this time. Anyway, Doug Osborne and his friend had originally intended to do some duck hunting along with the fishing this past weekend - BUT there "Ain't no Ducks" here this season! (please let them out if you are holding them hostage) So much for Cast N'Blast! The total ducks taken this duck season in this household = 4. And after running nearly 100 miles of river and bay after the storm, they could only find about 4 fish in 2 days. Some days are better than others. The good news is (sorry Doug!) Tommy's fly fishing trip in the western part of Apalachicola Bay with Scott Blackstock on Monday netted about 25 shots at 4 to 9 lb redfish on an incoming tide - once again with the crab fly. Thanks for the all the emails about the open tarpon dates. Those couple of days with Tommy are filled, but don't forget that we have 6 guides working this summer so we will get you hooked up!
