Just Catchin' Up - Feb 13, 2007

Who says you can't catch a redfish in the winter? Granted we had a couple of mild days last week with highs up to around 70 but still - Bull Reds in February!?! Capt. Dave & Capt. Nathan Donahoe - the self proclaimed "St. George Island Wrecking Crew" caught 27 of these big guys last Thursday. Of course they wouldn't tell me where they were and I'm supposed to tell Chad that they only caught 3 trout all day. I wonder if he's reading this.... Anyhow - this just proves the point that I continually try to make - first that Redfish are a year round target here in NW Florida and second that you just never know what might happen on a warm sunny winter day while fishing in Apalachicola. After I sent this message out via email to my fishing report subscribers, I ran into Capt. Jimmy Maxwell at the Piggly Wiggly. First off, I have to give him credit for telling Dave & Nate where the Redfish were last Thursday. Jimmy let me know that February and March are usually always good for catching Bull Redfish.

Tommy & Chris are Permit & Tarpon fishing in the Keys this month. Tommy wanted me to be sure to tell you that they are catching fish every day, even in not so stellar conditions, although they have had some gorgeous days recently. If you've ever fished with Capt. Tommy Robinson, you know that he doesn't usually let a little thing like the weather keep him from going fishing. It's just assumed that you're going to GO FISH!

The St. George Island Chili Cook-Off is on Saturday March 3rd - hope you can come enjoy the festivities AND the Chili. I'm planning to have an open house at the Galloway home that weekend, so if you come in to town, please stop by and say Hi & have a look around. You might even catch me at the shop downtown on a more regular basis - the fish mounts are on the way soon, as well as our new T-shirts and I'm trying to get myself organized and actually go to work. From the number of calls coming in recently, it looks as if I'm not the only one who thinks this spring & summer are going to be darn fishable. Don't tell anybody but we've got some June & July tarpon dates open.

March Forecast - Get ready for Pompano fishing! Capt. Nathan Donahoe is chomping at the bit to get out & get after them as soon as they show up mid month. He's even working on a sand flea tank to keep them alive longer. As it warms up many different fish will be arriving this month so plan more than one day of fishing if you're here for a couple of weeks and make your reservations soon because the spring break fishing set will be descending on us near the middle to end of March.

April Outlook - Our fishing season really gets rocking in April - just about everything that swims in our little piece of estuary heaven will be showing up both inshore and offshore. I'm predicting April will be hot this year both fishing and temperature wise. You know I'll be reporting to you if I'm right, so stay tuned.
