Apalachicola is OPEN FOR BUSINESS! - Jul 13, 2005
Contrary to popular belief and as much as I like St. George Island, we are still business as usual here in Apalachicola. The Restaurants are OPEN, the shops are OPEN, If you have reservations on the island you may have to come a few days later and/or possibly switch to a different house but by this weekend or possibly Monday, St. George Island will be OPEN too. AND most Especially the FISHING IS OPEN!!! (yes, I know I'm yelling - sorry, I got carried away with my message.)
3 Days post hurricane Dennis we have had guides on recon missions spread all over the 120 miles of coastline that we cover. I am happy to report the following:
Tuesday 7/12 - Charlie took a group offshore in his 32' Black Hawk 2 days post Dennis, where the fishing was "Really Good!" The anglers called me at 8:30 yesterday morning "Just in case" they could get out fishing. The water offshore was calm but cloudy, which causes the fish (like some snappers) that usually hold on natural/live bottom to be hunkered down behind wrecks to escape the current. The cloudier water keeps them from spooking and encourages them to EAT. His crew had a great day with red grouper, black grouper and mangrove, red & lane snapper.
Tommy drove the detour (which is in good condition) to Lanark where Adam was already out at Alligator point and Turkey point. The water clarity was confirmed as sight fishable.
Wednesday 7/13 - Chris fished (and is probably still fishing as I write this) with Larry Vorlicky & Richard Barton, who both came quite a distance for their annual trip. Chris called the flats "Pristine" and better than before the storm. By 3:30 they had hooked 5 tarpon and landed 2. They are Hungry! (Tarpon fishermen know what I mean) I talked to Larry by cell phone and he was VERY Happy he came here a couple days later than scheduled and he's probably the happiest angler on the water today. All day long they watched any number of different varieties of fish - Chris is Highly Impressed.
David took a tour around Little St. George Island and St. Vincent Island and pronounced them fit to fish, then proceeded to also hook 5 fish on fly. He noted that Bird Island is now a shoal and there's new bottom formations in that vicinity. Tommy headed west to the area around Crooked Island (Mexico Beach) and also liked very much what he saw there.
What I'm trying to get across is that if you have a fishing trip booked, come fishing, it's very fishable! Historically some of the best fishing is after a storm. If you need a list of places to stay, let me know and I'll email it to you. (note-our cancellation fee is 10% of your deposit)
Apalachicola IS open for Business!!
