October 2003 - Oct 8, 2003

If you like sunny, 75 degree days and sleeping at night with the window open, this is the time of year for you to visit us here. And if you are thinking about fishing, based on the activity the first part of October, better grab a rod and HOLD ON! The cooler water temperature gets the Redfish really excited and there are plenty of them in the clear shallow water. The big Bull Reds should also be biting in just a bit deeper water. This is a great time for all the different varieties of Trout too. Fishing in general should then continue to be mostly good all the way through the Christmas holidays, depending on the weather conditions.

Capt. Jr. Holland says the best thing about Bay fishing in November is an over-all bigger grade of fish. You are catching larger numbers of bigger fish that are drawn in by the cooler water, mostly on artificial lures like mirro-lures. He has experienced Novembers when his anglers caught 30 to 40 head of big speckled trout. When asked, Capt. Charles Cooper said November is Wonderful! It's his favorite time of year because it is cooler and more comfortable, you don't have to run as far to locate fish, there's less traffic and more serious anglers. (Capt. Chris Robinson and Capt. Chad Zingarelli were at the circus at this writing and unavailable for comment and Capt. Tommy Robinson wrote last month's column.)

In previous years you might have had a little trouble hooking up with a good fishing guide in November primarily because most of them that I know tend to vanish once hunting season starts. This year I have noticed that either the hunting bloom is slightly off the rose or else our guides are getting older and more responsible in their old age. Therefore, if the fishing bug bites, be sure to call.

Just a quick reminder, in case you have not noticed, Halloween weekend is a Holiday Weekend here in Apalachicola. Seafood Festival! Beginning Friday at Noon and running through Sunday afternoon at 4:00 well have live music, a parade, rides, local artists, crafts, lots to do and plenty to eat, especially SEAFOOD. Please come and join us if you can. (If you'd rather go fishing, we can handle that too!)
