Mid-Summer & Fall Forecast - Jul 22, 2003
First the bad news - yes we did have 2 tropical storms dump on us earlier this month, one right after the other, and the fresh water did effect the fishing the first 2 weeks of July but the good news is that fishing-wise things have been pretty much back to normal for well over a week. Actually the redfishing has been a little better than normal for the middle of July and Bay guides are catching "Purty" trout weighing at least 3 to 5 lbs every day. Flats & Bay trips are available the next 2 weeks.
August fishing in Apalachicola Bay can reel in a mixed bag, anything from Tripletail and Mackerel to our usual Trout & Redfish. If you want to avoid the crowds at the boat ramp, the last 2 weeks of August and the first 2 weeks of September are your best bet as families with children head back to school, but we still enjoy the summer-time fishing. Tommy & Chris both have Flats fishing dates open during this time frame and Chad and Jr. are looking to take you Bay fishing. The Fall fishing season commences about the middle of September when we switch gears on the flats for Redfish, Jack Crevalle, and others. (Advance reservations are suggested, as this is a popular time for our regular anglers to fish)
September Fishing Forecast - Fall is one of the most beautiful seasons here on the Forgotten Coast. After the long, hot summer, we enjoy warm, sunny days with low humidity and cool autumn evenings that encourage star gazing and moonlit walks on the beach. The summer population is way down, no waiting at favorite restaurants or our one traffic light, and we have some of the best fishing of the year, no matter how you like to catch them. For many years, anglers have traditionally come here to fish Apalachicola Bay in October and November. The best fishing can actually begin about mid to late September and continue into the latter part of December, depending on the migration of bait and of course, the weather. River fishing is especially good in August and September for Bull Bream and continues all fall for other freshwater species. We fish the Flats primarily for Speckled Trout, Redfish on the outside, Jack Crevalle, Tripletail and Cobia with fall migrations of Spanish Mackerel and Pompano likely. As the weather cools the fish begin to move into the marsh and river mouth where youll also baitfish in the Bay for Sheepshead, Black Drum & Flounder. This is a good time to head Offshore for Grouper, Snapper & Amberjack as well.
Newsflash!! Capt. Tommy Robinson just ordered his new Hells Bay Marquesa yesterday so that means his 18 Guide will be available for new ownership after the season is over. I promised several people that I'd let them know if he ever decided to sell - it's finally happened!
Please let me know if you are considering fishing your same days next May, June or July - if you were on the calendar for 2003 you have first refusal.
