May we interest you in some fishing? - May 17, 2002

Yesterday someone on the telephone said the nicest thing to me when he remarked "It?s good to hear your voice because that means we?re close to the beach" (and the fishing I presumed). If you?d been hanging out around "Robinson Corner" recently, you may get the mistaken impression that the only fish in the entire Gulf of Mexico since Mid-April is a Tarpon. (Tommy exclaims almost every evening "It?s as good as it gets!") Tarpon may be the summertime flats fishing preference, but it is not the only fish in the sea! Daily reports of big redfish schools on the flats, speckled trout in the bay and Spanish mackerel abound. Tripletail showed up early and are on the daily catch list as are still an occasional pompano, flounder & sheepshead. Even the little cobia are fun to catch and release and the ladyfish are great jumpers.

The first couple weeks of May are usually a little bit slower here but the fishing is fantastic. Schools haven?t let out yet and many anglers are saving their vacation time for summer. (Wish you were here?) Boat traffic is much lighter than it will be in another couple weeks and you can be seated straight away in most of our restaurants. We?ll savor it for another week or so. The lack of any appreciable rainfall (read drought) has kept the area water pretty clear, in general fishing conditions have been consistently good since the beginning of April. In the last 2 weeks I can only think of one day that was really too windy to fish out of a flats skiff, but the bayfishing was ok! Chad and Junior have had some excellent trips recently.

Thanks for the kind words from Carl Huber & Scott Holroyd. Scott fished with Capt. Chris on May 10th and writes:

Just wanted to drop a line (no pun intended) to congratulate Robinsons Brothers for another great fishing trip. Kudos to Chris for putting me on some great Reds even though the schools were not there and we had to count on finding the lone rogue hunters. I will recommend your guide service to everyone I know. Thanks for a great time.

Carl Huber enjoyed his trip with Capt. Jason Rucker in April:

Once again, I've had the pleasure of dealing with Robinson Brothers Guide service and in particular with Capt Jason Rucker. The details of the trip we're handled efficiently by Kathy, even if by remote in the Keys; and spending a day on the water with Jason is almost better then canned beer! This was my second trip with Jason and I wish every guide in the country would model themselves after him. He certainly knows his home water, is a gentleman with his customers, and treats the query with respect. Jason gives you a full day and is a true professional!! We even slayed the fish!!!

And if you?re REALLY bored, check out my own Tarpon fishing with Tommy adventure by clicking on "A Tarpon Tail" in the fishing reports section of our website. Call me if you want to check dates this summer - still have flats and bay fishing availability.
