Apalachicola, Key West, Everglades Report - Mar 7, 2002

Tommy Newell caught this 22 pound Barracuda fishing with Capt. Tommy out of Key West on February 22, on his new Orvis fly rod! If you’re in the neighborhood of The Osprey in Chattanooga, TN he’ll probably even show you the fly he caught it on. Permit & Bonefishing in general was good for the month of February with 15 shot days and up to 4 Permit boated in a day. I’ve added a few photos of the Keys trip to the website photo gallery - be sure to check out my 9 pound Bonefish! Looks like we are planning the Keys thing for next year. The fishing was so good that Tommy is giving up his January hunting!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the fishing out of Apalachicola has been halfway decent for February, especially for Bayfishing trips. This time of year it can be warm & sunny one day and then a front moves in for a hard freeze. I’m still having trouble adjusting to the change - I wonder how the fish feel about it? The past several years have been a bit milder and the Spanish Mackerel had already moved in by now. We are expecting their arrival any minute, with Pompano following right on their heels, uh fins. Spotted Seatrout are closed the month of February but the season has opened back up and the Redfish are schooling up. Spring breaks have started and Easter is early this year. If you’re headed to the coast anytime soon, call or email & I’ll hook you up with your favorite guide.

Tommy & Chris are settled into their Everglades routine. They have had a couple days of challenging weather but they are there to fish! Steve Bozeman caught a 17 pound snook on Fly and Jim Elsberry is just as proud of his 8 pounder. If you are booked to fish in the Everglades with either Tommy or Chris this March-April, they had to change houses at the last minute and their number has changed to 941-695-0911. Hope the sun is shining where you are!
