Fishing Calendar - Jan 19, 2001

It occurred to me that while many of you will be wholeheartedly looking forward to experiencing and participating in our annual local festivities, there are just as many who would rather, for lack of a better phrase ?Just go Fishing!? Here?s a little local Calendar of YOUR favorite shallow water events!

February - Temps anywhere from 35 to 80, water temps from 50 to 65. Nice size schools of Redfish; trout, black drum, flounder, sheepshead. Spanish mackerel and Pompano may begin to move in as the water warms up. Good fishing if the water is clear & the wind is down and the temperatures are mild. Still some Striper & Hybrid fishing up the river. Grouper fishing off shore.

March - As the water warms, Spanish Mackerel & Pompano begin to arrive in larger numbers along with the Bluefish. Larger numbers of Jack Crevalle late month. Conditions this month can be less than consistent (beautiful, warm & sunny one day, torrential rain the next) but the fish are usually here. Tommy & Chris make their yearly trip to the Everglades for Snook, Redfish & Tarpon.

April - Everything but Tarpon! The weather is more predictable; the migratory fish are moved in - Spanish, Pompano, Bluefish, Ladyfish, Jack Crevalle, Cobia & Black Tip Sharks. The Redfish & Trout head for spawning areas or are thickening up in their usual spring locations. Bull Reds move into shallower water - A great time to fish the area from the East end of St. George Island to Mexico Beach.

May - If you can imagine a species of Northern Gulf Saltwater fish, you can probably catch it here this month. Temperatures in the 80?s & into the 90?s. Lots of Redfish, Lots of Trout, Plenty of Cobia moving in. Lots of everything. Also, this is the beginning of the early arrival of Tarpon to our area.

June, July & August - Mostly Tarpon! June is an extension of May?s wonderful mix of fish. July & August we generally focus on Tarpon but all the rest of our fish are still here too. (The Weather Channel people start saying the ?H? word.)

September, October, November - Historically the busiest time of year here for local Bay fishing guides, plus we manage quite a few Fall Flats-trips for Redfish, Trout, Tripletail & Jack Crevalle as well. (More ?H? words bandied about)

December-January - Happy Holidays! Some good fishing on the warm, clear days between the winter fronts. Bass (Hybrid & Striped) in the Apalachicola River. Off shore fishing can also be good.
